In Madinat al-Ummal (“Workers City”)
quarter lives a marginalized and poor minority, the Al-Akhdam,
meaning “servants”, or, as they are calling themselves, Al-Muhamasheen, "the
marginalized ones". They are of African appearance, certainly immigrants
whose ancestors had arrived in Yemen already a long time ago. The Al-Akhdam stand on the very bottom of the
social ladder, are socially segregated, and are mostly confined to
menial jobs in the country's major cities. They often were – and partly still
are – victims of slavery. See:

In der
Gegend Madinat al-Ummal ("Arbeiterstadt
") lebt eine ausgegrenzte und arme Minderheit, die Al-Akhdam („Diener“), oder, wie sie sich selbst nennen, Al-Muhamashin,
die „Ausgegrenzten“. Sie sind afrikanischer Abstammung, sicherlich Einwanderer, deren
Vorfahren schon vor langer Zeit
in den Jemen gekommen sind. Die Al-Akhdam
stehen auf ganz unten auf der sozialen Leiter, sind sozial ausgegrenzt und werden
meist auf niedrige Arbeiten in
den großen Städten des Landes beschränkt.
